NC's Amendment One - My Closing Argument.

Recently the attempt by the GOP controlled legislature to pass Amendment One via popular vote in North Carolina has refueled the inner activist in me and today I am making my closing argument as to why I OPPOSE this horrible piece of legislation. First for clarification purposes I will restate the wording/purpose of this act:

TO AMEND THE CONSTITUTION TO PROVIDE THAT MARRIAGE BETWEEN ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN IS THE ONLY DOMESTIC LEGAL UNION THAT SHALL BE VALID OR RECOGNIZED IN THIS STATE.

The first issue that I have is that discrimination against anyone should never be placed within a document created to uphold the rights of all citizens. The second issue that I have is that gay marriage is already illegal in this state and an amendment is unnecessary and a waste of tax dollars (do you hear me Libertarians and fiscal Conservatives?) on a large scale. The third issue is that due to the wording of this act all homosexual couples and all unmarried heterosexual couples will be discriminated against. Although not specifically stated, numerous possibilities exist for state abuse and expansion of power introduced by the NC Republican Party. Do you hear me Conservatives? The GOP is your party and you claim to support small government conservatism; however, this act is a big government takeover of people's personal lives. You should oppose this and vote NO! Possible abuses include but are not limited to: women may be unable to receive legal protection from battering boyfriends, unmarried custodial parents may not be able to receive state mandated child support, custody of children may no longer be enforced by the state courts, and a dying partner (gay or straight) will be unable to see their partner on their death bed for the purpose of saying goodbye. Results most likely will be be an increase in domestic abuse, increased poverty from lack of child support, unfit parents raising children, and a state viewed as a heartless machine with no compassion. Another result will be a wave of children without health insurance because if this passes civic and others employers will have the legal option to drop children from insurance policies paid for by unmarried couples at work. This is an absolute outrage and should be fought! Finally this is simply about forcing the morality of a minority of Fundamentalist Evangelicals on the masses using a legislative hammer. From the very beginning of this fight I have speculated that this ballot initiative is an abomination straight from the depths of the Right Wing Family Values Machine. Now I am convinced. On my drive through Wake County today all the pro-amendment signs were in front of several local churches. I can only assume that they feel that the passing of this amendment will increase the interest in marriage; however, what they have forgotten is that the decision to marry is a personal decision and should never be influenced by the policies of the State. Amendment One will not strengthen the family. It will intrude in people's lives, destroy our standard of living, and promote a climate of bigotry and intolerance that for too long has been a characteristic of the former Confederacy.

VOTE AGAINST AMENDMENT ONE ON MAY 8.

Slant 6 - Soda Pop-Rip Off (1994)

In my opinion this album is one of the most underrated album in the Grunge/Riot Grrl scene. The songs on this release vary from aggressive punk noise to soft melodic implosions of emotion. Notable tracks on this album are Time Expired, Double Edged Knife, What Kind of Monster Are You?, and Thirty-Thirty Vision. The last two aforementioned tracks were also available in '93 as part of a three track single. This is an amazing release from a band that should have taken over the punk rock world. On a side note I have also mastered the album for your listening pleasure. Cheers!

Calamity Jane - Martha Jane Canary (1992)

1992 was considered by many to be the pinnacle of the Riot Grrl movement which included bands such as Hole, Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland, Slant 6, Huggy Bear, Fifth Column, and many others. One of the "many others" was the band Calamity Jane. Although they only released one LP and appeared on a handful of compilations (such as the phenomenal "Stars Kill Rock" in 1993) they had far reaching influence on the music community. One interesting story involving this band occurred on October 30, 1992 when they opened for Nirvana in Argentina and survived a macho, disrespectful crowd. This is their only LP. Enjoy this recording, turn down the treble a bit, and try to keep the revolution civil!

A Mission of Preservation

In the coming weeks I intend to post albums that are either out of print or nearing extinction. Most of the included recordings will be from independent labels and will cover several genres including punk, grunge, riot grrl, and metal. This is a labor of love for me because I want to see these recordings circulated among people who will appreciate them.
